Canon PowerShot G9The introduction of the PowerShot G9 in Canon’s highly acclaimed G series has come as a short in the arm for camera enthusiasts worldwide. The sophisticated design coupled with a high image quality makes the G9 stand high above its competitors. With a resolution of 12.1 megapixels, a 6x zoom with a RAW mode, and an Optical Image Stabilizer, the PowerShot G9 is all set to become a real treat for ambitious photographers.

The Canon PowerShot G9 is visually almost similar to its predecessor, the PowerShot G7, with one obvious change – the reprofiling of the handgrip and the rear panel. Below the skin, the G9 has a sensor resolution of 12 megapixels and this is slightly higher than G7 which had only 10 megapixels. Images can be framed on the optical zoom viewfinder, which is quite rare these days, and on a 3.0-inch LCD display. The optical viewfinder saves your battery life and ensures better shots in bright sunlight. However, when precise framing is necessary the LCD naturally becomes a better option. The Canon PowerShot G9 is different from its predecessor in other ways too. What makes the PowerShot more interesting than its predecessors is the return of the Raw format. The larger LCD ensures a wide-angle view, the lens is faster, and the camera ensures image stabilization.

The best thing about PowerShot is the fact that though it is as automatic as a digicam yet at allows you take complete control. The Raw file format which had been removed in the previous model is back in this model. The LCD display at 3.0 inches is larger by half an inch. The SDHC/MMC card storage and the USB 2.0 connectivity are also among the few additions from the previous versions.

The multiple modes that the camera offers are quite user friendly and take much of the manual working off your hands. These modes include Aperture Priority (Av), Shutter Priority (Tv), Full manual mode, Auto, Programmed Auto, Movie mode, Custom settings, Scene mode and the Stitch Assist mode. The Scene mode gives you a fair selection of options to choose from including those for fireworks, aquariums portraits landscape indoor etc. The programmed Auto gives the best performance in sunlight. The photo effects offered in the camera ensure a superior picture quality. The picture sharpness is enabled by good overall color balance, good shadow detail, impressive resolution and an overall better white balance. The control layout is logical and it is being anticipated that the Canon PowerShot G9 is going to be a true photographer’s camera.

The Canon uses MultiMedia Card or the SD card for storage. It includes a 32 MB card but this card can hold only about five high quality images. It’s better to go for a 1 GB card which allows you to shoot for eighty minutes. For still higher shooting, you should go for a 4 to 8 GB card. The lithium-ion battery is slightly larger than those used in PowerShots. This 7.4 volt mAh battery ensures about 240 shots with the LCD or about 600 without it. The wireless charger is compact and hassle-free. Camera enthusiasts who are slightly worried about its weight actually enjoy this model when it comes to performance. The LCD size, download speed, Startup and Shutdown times, and Cycle time are way ahead of other models. With a zoom range of 35 mm to 210 mm to 4x digital zoom, the Canon PowerShot ensures the desired picture quality and stands up to your expectations. The great build quality, excellent print quality, and a good battery life are features that would indeed go well with camera lovers and photo enthusiasts worldwide.
